Pet Visitation

Thursday, July 29, 2010

Dear Stella Rose,

Last night mama finally convinced papa to bring Paoli to visit.  It is so nice that the hospital allows pet visitation.  They try to make the antepartum stay as much like home as possible.  Papa was hesitant about bringing her to the hospital, because he thought she would act crazy in an unfamiliar environment.

She didn't do so bad!  When she first got up to the room she just kept walking back and forth trying to figure out where she was at.  Once she finally felt comfortable, she just made herself right at home.

It was so nice for mama to get to see Paoli.  She misses her and the kitties a bunch.  She was so afraid Paoli wouldn't remember who she was since it has been 7 weeks since she's seen her.  Paoli didn't forget!

Paoli got to stay for over a half an hour, and then it was time for her to go home.  Papa was nervous that Paoli would go #2 somewhere in the hospital because of all the excitement!  Mama told him she wouldn't do that.  She was 6 months old the last time she did that!  Here's the story...

When Paoli was just a puppy, mama and papa started taking her to an obedience training at their vet's office.  They said she was too old for the puppy class, so they had to enroll her in the 2 year old dog class (which didn't make sense because she wasn't even a year old, yet!)  Anyway, at every class you had to walk your dog around the room in a circle with all the dogs and practice making them "heel."  This one particular time, Paoli, in all the excitement, decided to stop while all the other dogs were still walking around.  She wasn't just taking a break, though.  She decided to go #2!  Right on the training room floor!  Papa got a dirty look from the instructor and had to clean it up!

Thankfully, Paoli didn't go to the bathroom in mama's room or anywhere else in the hospital.  She is good about letting them know when she needs to go.  She seemed ready to go, so mama got ready to go on a wheelchair ride to say bye bye to Paoli.

She didn't have a hard time getting into the elevator on the way up, but she must not have liked the ride because she didn't want to get in the elevator on the way down.  Once she was in there, she was ready to get out!

Bye bye, Paoli!

Mama is going to miss her, but it won't be much longer until you both will get to see her...and the kitties!

35 Week Ultrasound

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Dear Stella Rose,

35 weeks...wow!  Mama and papa are so excited to have made it this far!  Doc had said something again yesterday about seeing what MFM says after the ultrasound and maybe sending you guys home for a week or two.  Mama asked Doc again if she still thought making it 40 weeks was out of the question.  Doc said that with the preeclampsia, she would induce labor by 39 weeks.  Mama still feels more comfortable staying in the hospital, especially with having to manage the gestational diabetes.  Her blood sugars have been creeping up little by little each day, and her night time dose has been increased 3 times just in the last week!

Today was your 35 week ultrasound and biophysical exam.  You were getting measured today, too. You passed your biophysical with flying colors again...practice breathing right away, moving like the busy bee you are, and all the doplers were great.  Your fluid was back up to 10.71 cm, too!

You are still breech, but Doc said there is still enough time and fluid for you to flip around.  If you don't turn on your own, they won't try to externally flip you due to the low fluid.  Mama will just have to have a C-section.

You measured 5 lbs 9 oz which is in the 35th percentile.  It was a little odd, because you had grown 1 lb 5 oz in 2 weeks the last time, and according to today's ultrasound you had only grown 5 oz in the last 2 weeks.  Two weeks ago you were measuring in the 62nd percentile.  Doc said they would just continue to watch your monitoring strip.  Preeclampsia can cause the placenta to stop providing the nutrients you need to grow, but that would be odd since mama's blood pressures haven't gone up, her blood lab results always come back fine, and you look beautiful on the monitor every time.  You would think that you wouldn't do as well on the monitor if the placenta was preventing your growth.

Ultrasound measurements are also just estimates and can be off by a pound either way.  They can also be different if you don't have the same ultrasound technician everytime.  The past two measurements were done by the same tech, but this time it was done by a new hire.  Mama isn't worried about it.  God is and always will be in control.  She thinks this is just another way of him showing them to just stay in the hospital to wait out the rest of the pregnancy as he did last time.

"He will cover you with his feathers.  he will shelter you with his wings.  His faithful promises are your armor and protection." ~Psalm 91:4

Artsy Stuff

Sunday, July 25, 2010 - Tuesday, July 27, 2010

Dear Stella Rose,

Mama and papa are very thankful for all of their friends and family, so mama has been busy at work making more thank you cards.  She has enjoyed the time to be able to be creative, for that time will be scarce pretty soon!

Here a few more of the designs...

Mama also worked on a drawing for lil' Kendyll.  Her request was a picture of Barbie.  Mama found a picture from the "Barbie in a Mermaid Tale" movie to draw, but she was having a hard time getting Barbie's face to look like Barbie...but close enough!

This next one is of Jagger, Kelly's big great dane.  Mama loved the picture so much she had to draw it!

Mama has been keeping a sample of each card she's made on bed rest for you in a 4x6 photo album.  She hopes that you will enjoy art and paper crafts and like to get creative with mama as you get older!

Nana's Shower

Saturday, July 24, 2010

Dear Stella Rose,

Today was another exciting day.  Nana was throwing a baby shower for you in the solarium, too.  Mama was able to use a wheelchair ride again to be able to attend.  Papa sat next to mama the whole time and helped her open all of your gifts.

Your cake

Papa and Mama...in the background (Great Great Grandma Taylor, Great Aunt Karen, Chelsea & Uncle Ben)

Mama forgot to have Uncle Ben take pictures of all the guests that were there, but here is who all came:
Nana & Papaw, your Great Great Grandma Taylor, Great Aunt Karen, Uncle Ben & Chelsea, Great Aunt Sherri & Great Uncle Rick, Sylvia & Jason, Great Uncle Clint & Great Aunt Pam, Aunt Pat, Lisa & Lori, and Kathy Flatter.
It's hard to see in this picture, but the big box full of goodies was wrapped in receiving blankets.  Mama thought it was a cute idea!

Mama and Papa get a kick out of this product because it's name is so straight and to the point...Boudreux's Butt Paste!

You received many more needed items.  Papa was happy to see a "Daddy's Little Princess" outfit!  Great Aunt Karen, Holly & Julie bought your stroller and car seat travel system.  Yay!  Now you have a way to get home!  Your Great Great Grandma Taylor is so generous and will be buying your first year supply of diapers!

Mama and papa had a great time visiting with family they hadn't seen in a while.  They are so blessed to have such great family and friends and are so very grateful for all the wonderful gifts for you!
Now, the best gift of all...

Picture Fun

Friday, July 23, 2010

Dear Stella Rose,

After the baby shower, Leslie & Shelli came back to mama's room for a little bit.  They wanted to get a picture of the three of them together, but they wree having a hard time taking the picture themselves and fitting everyone in the picture.

When Leslie tried to take the picture Shell's head would get cut off.  Then Shelli tried to take the picture and Leslie's head got cut off.  Mama tried to take the picture, and that didn't come out so well either!  Finally, they had to ask mama's nurse to take the picture...much better!!

After the girls left, papa came home soon after.  He was having fun looking through all of your gifts.

Mama was practicing photographing papa...she's got to get ready for all the pictures that she'll be taking of you!

Baby Shower Time

Friday, July 23, 2010

Dear Stella Rose,

Tonight was your baby shower that mama's good friends in her women's bible study had thrown together last minute...and they did such a great job!  Mama was excited to get to see everyone, and she even put on something other than pajamas!  First time in 2 months!  She was able to use her wheelchair ride to attend the shower, which was held in the Solarium at the hospital.  Doc even gave mama an extra half hour for her wheelchair ride!

It was such a great time to visit with everyone.  Mama was happy so many people were able to come.  It really meant a lot to her that the girls pulled the shower together and so many people were able to attend with such short notice.

Didn't Kelly do such a great job on your cake?

Your pretty rose bouquet and star balloons to go with your name :)

God's Provision

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

Dear Stella Rose,

A few weeks ago, a friend of mama and papa's offered mama an opportunity to do a research project. His company usually did the research in house, but they were looking to outsource it this quarter.  Mama was excited to be able to earn some income while on bed rest, since her vacation time at work had run out and she and papa were making things work on just his income.

They had worked out a payment structure where mama would get paid so much per school. What mama had to do was visit the websites of colleges and universities and check their home page, admissions page and alumni page to see if they had any social media links, such as: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Flickr, and MySpace. Then she had to record it on a spreadsheet.

Mama thought she was making good progress with having 200 of the schools done. Half way done, she thought, so she took off a week from working on it thinking it wouldn't take that long to finish it. When mama started to work on it again last weekend, she was scrolling down through the spreadsheet and realized she was in the 700's...what? She thought there were only 405 schools, how was she in the 700's? 900's? Oh goodness, there were 1,405 schools, not 405! Obviously mama didn't see the 1 in front of the 405 when she was being shown how to do the project!

Uh oh...this was going to take longer than she had anticipated! Mama didn't let that stress her. She had plenty of time to get it finished; she just had to start working on it more! She remembered a way she was shown to save time that she hadn't been doing, so it actually wasn't that bad to get the rest of it finished. She went from averaging 20 schools per hour to 50 per hour, so that was great!

It was just another way of God showing his provision. The income she thought she was going to make from the project just tripled! To make his provision even more evident, mama's friend even increased the per school rate to cover what mama would have to pay in taxes, plus some! What a blessing!

Always remember that God will always provide for you. Remember this especially in the midst of trials when you are unable to grasp how things will work out.

"And god will generously provide all you need.  Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others." ~2Corinthians 9:8

"I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of oll the marvelous things you have done." ~Psalm 9:1

3rd Trimester Food Cravings

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

Dear Stella Rose,

Mama's food cravings have been limited during her third trimester, since all of it has been spent in the hospital on a gestational diabetic diet.  She has been allowed 30 grams of carbohydrates for breakfast and 60 grams each for lunch and dinner.  You'd be surprised just how many carbs are in a lot of things!

There are only a few entrees that have little to no carbohydrates.  The chicken caesar salad (without the croutons), roast turkey with gravy and the chicken salad plate with vegetables are about the only entrees that are zero carbs, so mama orders them a lot and they are good.  The chicken fingers (good), salisbury steak and asiago chicken (just okay) all have 15 grams.  Then there are entrees like the pasta with meat sauce (one of mama's favorites) and the chicken quesadillas are each 45 grams, so they pretty much eat up her carb limit for that meal.

As far as sides go, the fresh veggies don't have any carbs, except for peas and corn, but they are hit or miss on whether they are good or not.  Mama loves the mashed potatoes and gravy which are 15 grams, and the veggie snack plate and the coleslaw are both zero, which mama orders often.  She also normally orders a 2% milk with every meail, so she has to reserve 15 grams for one little carton of it.  Mama has grown fond or milk during her hospital stay.  There must be something about drinking out of a carton and a straw...like she is back in school (except she always got a chocolate milk back then!)

At first mama avoided looking at the dessert menu altogether.  She would rather eat healthier carbs than the sugar filled carb items.  Then her dietician told her there was sugar free jello and sugar free pudding.  The jello has no carbs and the pudding has 15 grams.  Grumpa gave mama a good idea to put a scoop of peanut butter in the chocolate pudding and make it like a Reese's peanut butter cup.  What a genius idea!  Mama does that whenever she is craving something chocolatey!

For breakfast it is pretty easy to max out the 30 gram limit.  Mama started off ordering the ham and cheese omelette every morning because it was all protein and no carbs, but that got old after a week.  Her usual breakfast order consists 2 orders of bacon (4 strips total) with either an English muffin with diet jelly and butter, Cheerios with a 2% milk, a cinnamon roll, or a danish.  Sometimes mama will order the french toast with diet syrup and an order of sausage.  All of those items except the bacon and sausage max out the 30 gram limit.  Mama can't forget to order her 2 decaf coffees and a newspaper.  Grumpa loves to do the crossword puzzles in the paper every day and he finishes them in a zip!

Weekdays are nice, because the hospital allows their long term patients to order from the Cafe menu during lunch time.  It has been a nice change to be able to switch things up a bit.  Like barbeque ribs, flank steak, enchiladas, talapia and mahi mahi.  The sides are even better tasting!

Mama is allowed one snack up to 15 grams between meals, which mama didn't even realize until a couple weeks ago.  A perfect snack to soothe a sweet tooth are the individually wrapped Rice Krispy Treats!  One of the other women at the antepartum support group told mama that, so Grumpa bought a big box of them!  Mama lets papa eat all of the chocolate candies people have brought for her, since those are too high in carbs for mama to even have a little snack.

For the most, part it hasn't been too bad.  It's actually not only been good for you, but healthy for mama to eat a carb controlled diet.  The nurses have told her that a diabetic diet is the best diet for any person to be on whether you are diabetic or not.

The part that mama looks forward to being over with though are all the insulin shots and finger pricking to test her blood sugar.  For breakfast and lunch mama has to get one unit of insulin injected for every 20 grams of carbs.  For dinner it is for every 10 grams.  Then if her blood sugar is above 125 an hour after eating, she has to get one more unit of insulin if it is between 125 and 140 and even more units based on a sliding scale if it is higher than 140.  Mama's fasting blood sugar needs to be under 95, so she gets pricked in the morning, too.

As a pregnant woman with gestational diabetes gets farther along in her pregnancy, her body's insulin resistance rises.  Mama started off having to get a long acting insulin injection before bed that was 6 units and has slowly been increased to 9 units as her fasting blood sugars started to creep above 95.  She also used to only get one unit of insulin for every 20 grams at dinner, and that too has increased to one unit per every 15 grams and now it is for every 10 grams.

It's much easier to monitor and keep track of mama's blood sugars and the treatment of gestational diabetes while in the hospital.  Mama's diabetes doctor has done a great job watching and correcting the rise in mama's blood sugars, which is great for you!

Don't worry, this has all been worth it just so you can be healthy and in mama and papa's arms in no time!

34 Week Ultrasound

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

Dear Stella Rose,

Today was your 34 week ultrasound and biophysical exam.  Both mama and Doctor K were anxious to see what your fluid was going to be.  There was a new ultrasound tech that was training today, so it took a little longer than normal since she was getting familiar with the newer equipment.  You had the hiccups, so you passed the breathing portion right off the bat!  Your heart rate and all your doplers were great, as usual, and you were moving all about.

You've actually had the hiccups quite a bit over the last couple weeks.  Dr. K says that unhealthy babies don't get the hiccups, so its a good thing that you have had them so much!

Your fluid measured at about 9 cm today, but it was most likely the way you were positioned again.  The doctor said she wouldn't be concerned unless your fluid had dropped to 5 cm.  Plus, your bladder looked full, so that could iincrease your fluid a tad bit.

They were able to get a beautiful profile shot of you today.

You are gorgeous!  Mama and papa can't wait to finally meet you and squeeze you and look into your eyes!

More Belly Bump Pics

Sunday, July 18, 2010

Dear Stella Rose,

Today was a big day!  You've made it to 34 weeks!  That milestone is so exciting, especially since the very first day mama was admitted to the hospital, it was unknown just how far mama would be able to carry you before it became dangerous with mama's preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.

You are a trooper.  A happy baby in there that's for sure, always rumbling around!  Getting bigger and bigger day by day, growing healthy and strong!

Here is your growth (and mama's) over the last 6 weeks.

29 weeks - 31 weeks

32 weeks - 34 weeks

Mama's enjoyed watching you grow and feeling your movements as you get bigger and stronger. Mama and papa still can't believe you are going to be here so soon!

Love,
Mama & Papa
